TRAVELING TRUNK PROGRAM

Traveling Trunks with Cherokee and Muscogee

The Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association (GATOTA) provides to 2nd grade educators in Georgia a Traveling Trunk Program designed to supplement the teaching of Cherokee and Muscogee (Creek) studies. Included are a teaching guide and trunk contents which meet the corresponding Georgia Department of Education 2nd grade Social Studies Standards of Excellence. The trunk contains multiple authentic items and artifacts designed to pique students’ interest. The accompanying Teaching Guide contains Teachers’ Notes addressing each standard, comprehensive lesson plans, craft instructions, games and other resources that can be helpful to 2nd grade educators.

Trunks are currently available for circulation in northwest Georgia. See the Trunks Locations List at gatrailoftears.com for trunk host locations and contact information.

GATOTA encourages educators to seek grant monies to fund the creation of trunks designated for their schools. GATOTA will provide support and guidance to schools seeking to create their own trunks. To speak with a GATOTA representative about how to create a trunk, contact our organization at ga.trailoftears@gmail.com.

Evaluation of the Traveling Trunk Program: Please take a few minutes after using the trunk contents and/or Teaching Guide to complete an evaluation form online. Georgia TOTA will utilize your feedback to make improvements to the Traveling Trunk Program in the future.
